Great point; and as such, considerations such as practicality on a 
long-term basis, cost effectiveness, and such are probably not high 
priority items.  College projects are done because students have to do 
something (or their professors do).  Most such endeavors are quickly 
forgotten when the final reports, papers, and grades are registered and, 
if it is to have use beyond that, someone or something will have to pick 
it up and run with it.  Then practical considerations become paramount not 
just intellectual curiosity.
