Hello Becky:

Microsoft is hinting that Windows 8 will be released in the fall of 2012.

Not like Windows XP, VISTA will be around for a wile.

What did you decide about fixing the DVD CD drive door?

The below link will tell you how to upgrade your system to Windows 7.

Pay close attention to the links:

Windows 7 system requirements This link shows you what a computer needs to
run Windows 7.

Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor This link will do a comparison of your VISTA
machine and tell you what other hardware such as memory or software such as
drivers you will need. This advisor requires you download and run a small
program.
