Hi Tom,
Well I know exactly what you are dealing with.
I used a trunk mount on a Grand Prix for several years with very good 
success!
That's the way I would go if I were you.
The placement of the antenna on the side of the trunk lid will keep it from 
hitting the top of the car.
We now have a Toyota Prius which does not allow a ham rig at all because of 
all the computers: bummer!
But I must say, we sure to like the 50 plus miles to the gallon; I guess I 
can't have everything.
