Keep in mind that lists, such as this one, tend to be populated by geeks
and those with vested interests in seeing "the latest and greatest" being
used and promoted.
Hence, I'd take with a grain of salt comments on Win8.
Win7 will give you much of the feel of XP -- once you get comfortable with
it --, has, at a minimum, 6 more years of formal MSFT support, and is
widely used.
I think that, if I were in your shoes, I'd probably take the route of
getting a pc with win 7 home premium or professional on it, and while
growing comfortable with it, continue using your xp pc for the time being.
Then, as you grow comfortable and see what works and doesn't work for you,
make the switch moving stuff from one pc to another.
This doesn't have to be an all or nothing thing; and you don't have to go
cold turkey -- unlike quitting smoking, as an example -- for it to work
for you.
Just one viewpoint; and I suspect that I shall see bricks thrown in my
direction shortly from some.
We are ready to leap forward in our Christian walk when we embrace
the unshakable reality that the universe revolves around God, not us.
