Duane,
Without reservation, I recommend Mozilla thunderbiard, available from
www.GetThunderbird.com
It's free, open-source, is regularly updated with security/bug fixes and
is extremely similar, in many ways, to Outlook Express. It also works
quite well with JAWS. It is the email program which I use exclusively
at home.

The hard drive was not damaged and I have encaqpsulated and connected it to my Windows 7 computer as an external drive. (I was gradually switching over from the XP to the W7 machine but didn't get very far in this process before the XP machine died.)
