Tom,

I guess there are any number of things that could be going on, and 
you've gotten a lot of good suggestions on things to check.

Here is a link  to some info from the Heil sight on this subject.    I'm 
not suggesting that you tear into the mic connector at this point, but 
figured I'd throw it out  to add to your growing pile of info:
