Well, I think we just need to wait and see. Remember that there's always
a trickle down effect. Sure, smart phones and tablets are getting more
and more powerful, but so are laptops and desktops. Ditto for servers.
Therefore, just because smart phones and tablets are more powerful than
laptops and desktops were a few years ago, laptops and desktops and low
end servers aren't sitting still. They're also growing in power, storage
capacity and so on. Finally, where do we draw a line between a tablet
and laptop or a desktop and a server? IMHO, I think these distinctions
are mostly academic and these prognostications about the end of the
laptop or the desktop are just meant to stir up discussions like this.
I'll switch to a tablet or a smart phone for my every day development
when they meet my needs, but I don't see an ARM chip based smart phone
or tablet replacing laptops or desktops in the back offices any time soon.
