Gerry,
I have the Ic 7000 and it is harder to learn the most radios but it talks,
you can get a QSY ER for direct frequency input, using dual VFOes with a
single key, access memory channels up to nearly 500 individual channels, but
there is no definitive documentation to teach yourself how to use the menu
panel; at least that I am personally aware of. I have the manual that Icom
sent me in text format but it is nearly worthless. It works as a reference
but not has a good step by step, or how to, book. I read it, find what I am
looking for, have my son that lives next door stop by, and tell him to go to
page 103, for example, and what I want to learn he reads, we go through it
together until I learn the procedure. Then I try and jot down Brail steps
to get to it. I've never tried the software for, except for Ham Radio
deluxe, and that was worthless on the netbook I hooked it up to and it also
used the same input jack as the QSY ER so there was a lot of plugging and
unplugging of the netbook and HRD and the QSY ER. It is the best radio I've
ever owned but there is more I don't know than I do know about it. The 6
and 2 meter performance in all modes is great, too, but the receiver on
those bands is not as sensitive than a stand alone rig, for example, on
either of those two bands. I have a Icom V7 and the 2 and 70 CM receiver in
it is way better than the 7000. As with some, or most, radios, some things
don't talk or just beep. I have discovered work around to nearly all the
problems but keeping them in mind to operate freely without looking up a
procedure is frustrating. If there was more step by step learning
materials, that would help a lot. I was considering making MP3 files and
doing lessons as I learned to share with other hams but I have developed a
problem with my voice and simply do not have the vocal strength, due to my
vocal cords, to do that type of thing any longer. I bought it mostly for CW
and it is the best CW receiver I've ever used. I got mine unsale for 1000
dollars but I think they used to be 1300 dollars. I was buying 5 grand
worth of ham gear, including a 40 meter rotary dipole, an amp, and some
other things at the time, so I got a big 500 dollar discount. If you have
sighted assistance, and if you get the QSY ER keypad, you can do amazing
things with the radio. Its broadcast band and FM band are super.
Phil.
