Excuse typos:
Thanks Uncle Sountou et al,
I believe I have patiently done enough humane explanations.
In my competition notice I wrote MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR and MULTI-YEAR PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP...." Is this not self-explaining?
I think the skeptics are taking me for a DAY DREAMER who did not do his homework! I know such such kinds of crazy adventures could be beyond the imagination of some people (going to the mood, building Suez and Panama Canals, wiring the world with telegraphic cables, etc). But this is not the first and it will not be the last to face doubting Thomases.
For sure many people are hungry to know how much my Gambia Film Village Project will cost and who will pay for it. MY LIPS ARE SEALED ON THE EXACT DETAILS. If I should sign a CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT, no one should expect me to break this agreement before he or she takes me serious or join me!!
I need the Cost Implication from the ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, then I will prepare the business plan with details of the costs. This is how far I can talk.
With Nollywood I have been part of it since 2004 and I know the nitty-gritty there. The typical Nollywood movie costs between 15,000 and 50,000USD. Here in Germany you need minimum 200,000 Euros (two hundred thousand Euros) for low budget and there are federal and state film funds to tap from. My film BACKFIRE cost 400,000 (four hundred thousand) Euros minimum to shoot.
Again on Nollywood, The Nigerian Federal Government has set aside 200 Million Dollars (two hundred million) for the industry. I am a stakeholder in Nollywood I can tap into this fund if I want to because I meet the criteria.
There are other non-Gambian funding sources for my Gambian Film Village Project to make me LESS dependent on Jammeh and Co. There is not title competition here.
Tell me, how can I cooperate with The Gambia Government (national and technocratic) without accepting the reality of passing through the Sheikh Professor (political and security)? If Jammeh does not give his GREENLICHT, should I commit suicide by entering the Gambia like that? The risks with Jammeh's green-light is better than the risk without his green-light as global witnesses will be in the picture. How many people will volunteer to go and take the risks on my behalf on the ground.
Anybody with better ideas (building a film village in The Gambia and by-passing Jammeh) is free to share them. I am open to constructive thoughts.
I shot a movie on FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION titled "ADAH the last circumcision in Africa." It cost USD50,000 (Fifty thousand United States) as it was shot on location in Nigeria with Nigerian stars in 2008. I am not yet releasing it for market and sensitivity reasons. I intend to screen it in The Gambia and give copies to the GAMCOTRAP ladies for their campaign.
If I screen the movie in The Gambia without problem (FGM is sensitive topic in Gambia), I will have the motivation to do more. I have other movies on my portfolio (TEARS IN AFRICA on child trafficking, AGONY GIRL on rape, BACKFIRE on excessive jealousy, to name a few). They will all come out when the market is ripe for me. For now the Nigerians are spoiling the market and I have to work on my other alternative distribution channels.
I am an Art House Filmmaker focusing on social taboos but I am open to compromises both political and commercial. One favorable political film on President Jammeh (fiction, biopic or documentary) for example cannot overshadow my five or ten movies on THE VOICELESS members of our society.
Critical Director OLIVER STONE made a favorable political film on FIDEL CASTRO of Cuba (Il Commandante, 2003). This cooperation with a "dictator" did not affect Mr. Stone's credentials as he has more critically-acclaimed movies in his portfolio (Wall Street, JFK, you count the rest).
I am not jumping and trying to MOVE A MOUNTAIN OVER NIGHT.
My moves and risks are very well calculated.
The least people can do is to tell my CONSTITUENTS,I mean the WOMEN, to keep praying for me. Then if anything happens, they will miss my honour, stubbornness and machoism. Good girls love stubborn boys. My movie on FGM is dedicated to them. Hopefully I will screen it at the CIF Festival am planning in Gambia as part of my film village project.
Am the marmite man!
I think I have done enough explanations. Now let me just reserve my flight to The Gambia and be on the standby for Jammeh's green-light. Actions speak louder.
Warmest,
Prince BA Sankanu
