“A vulnerable identity is … cultivated by
government, which not only plays a part in
constructing individuals as such but also then
implements policies with the ostensible aim of
protecting such a fragile and at risk population.
… The concept of survival from myriad threats is
deeply embedded within contemporary society to
such an extent that it is not only those who
identify as a survivor, but also all of us who
are seen as surviving life and the daily
interactions of which it is composed.” p 4
In democracy, we elect and hold congress to
account … If we are classified as irrational, as
suffering from myriad mental disorders that limit
our capacity and responsibility, then the basis
of democratic accountability is compromised.
“Instead of 'we the people' holding the state to
account, the state takes on the role of doctor,
caring for a vulnerable, irrational, and
potentially dangerous electorate.” p 127
