Junior,
WHile using Voiceover you can press control-option-shift-d (sounds complicated, but is not) and that will take you to the Desktop. TIp, don't store everything on your Desktop .
As far as reading messages in Mail, what version of the OS are you running? YOu can find this by using the VoiceOver keys, control-option-m or control-f2, press down arrow until you here "About this Mac", and press return/enter. The only reason why this matters is the way in which you would work with Mail.
