Regarding the telescopic antenna on the Tr22, that's why I made a
shoulder mount quarter wave antenna out of an old scuba tank
fiberglass mount, and piano wire and RG174. I bet it was pretty
lossy, but at least my telescoping whip stayed perfect. Jim

I had the same setup in the mid-70s, except I think my amp was a
30-watt
box.

The weird thing was when I ran the amp and worked on one of the
simplex
frequencies, I had a birdie right on the input of the club
repeater. If I
took the TR-22C off the power supply, then the birdie
disappeared. After
the power supply was cleaned up with some better voltage
protection, the
whole thing ran well without a birdie.

Those JLB synthesizers were sure the hit back then.

The only bad thing about the tr-22 was if you walked around with
it, the
telescoping antenna would rattle and you'd get a scratchy noise
in your
signal.

 Jim,

At one time, my TR-22C was my main 2-meter station. I built a
power
 supply
and mounted the mobile bracket for the rig on top of it. A
friend of mine
put a DIN plug where the headphone jack should be, and I ran a
GLB
synthesizer with that radio. I drove the Drake 10-watt
amplifier, and
 that
combination served me very well for quite a while.

Oh yah, the good old Drake TR22c. That was my first piece of
new
gear. I found an old fiberglass scuba tank holder, that hobby
is
another story, and made a shoulder mount antenna with a quarter
wave piano wire antenna for the Tr22c. Jim WA6EKS

My first gear was a used Drake TR22 on two meters. My first hf
 equipment
was a borrowed HW8 that I used with a dipole mounted in the
 attic. I then
graduated to an HW101 with audible tuning indicator across the
 meter output.
