let me weigh in on this as well.  The Wouxun software in any of its variations is not accessible
either.

Like I said, there is no current software that is screen reader friendly 
that I know of for the UV5R.
Buddy may know something I don't, but neither chirp nor the supplied baofeng 
software are accessible.
So the programming cable isn't that useful, unless you have a kenwood HT 
that you want to use the cable on.
The ear bud head set can be useful if you don't mind using something like 
that...it sounds good both on RX, and on tx using the small PTT switch on 
the headphone wire and the inline microphone.
SO I would say forget about the cable unless you have a kenwood HT that you 
can use it on, and the headset is kind of a flimsey little thing that is 
more bother than it's worth for my operating.
A real speaker mike is more useful I think.
That said, you will most often get something added into the package and it's 
not going to cost more to have it or not have it added to the package...
