Don,

Consider the placement of your computer.

If you are plugging the transmitter in to a USB port on the back of your 
computer positioned under a desk, the signal won't get out very well.

Try plugging the transmitter in to a front USB jack or purchase a USB 
extension cable and get the transmitter up in the air a little.

If 300 feet was advertised, than this is not Blue Tooth.  Also, the 
transmitter most likely will work only with the included speaker.  Probably 
cant mix and match other components.

Can you give me more specific information, model number of said speaker 
system?
