When I was running Windows a few years ago, I assume that's the OS 
you're asking about, I just ended up using Microsoft Security Essentials 
(MSE. I figured it wasn't the best if you were running non-Microsoft 
applications like thunderbird and Firefox, but it was simple to run, 
accessible and didn't overly tax system resources. I've read that 
recently Microsoft has admitted that it isn't as good an anti-virus 
application as it used to be, but I'd assume that between MSE and a good 
dose of common sense, you'll be pretty safe.
