Unless it's another urban myth, my understanding is that a 12 point dot 
system was developed by the french military as a code; taken to the school 
for the blind by a colonel.   What I read or heard somewhere, the teachers 
at the school were not impressed as it was not aesthetic but Louis Braille 
down-sized it to a six point system enabling full coverage by the fingertip. 
etc., etc So, its forerunner was developed by the french military.  I'd like 
to hear more about the stanford braille keyboard.  Hopefully, it will be 
further developed and find its way to the marketplace.
