Alan, yeah, I remember in 1954, my Dad and I went out to the Chevrolet -
Cadillac dealership in my hometown to pick up our new Chevy, and there was a
beautiful, long, black Caddy sitting in front of the dealership on display,
and my Dad pointed to it, and said: "now, that is one hell of an expensive
car; it costs almost $3,000!"

As a kid, shortly after getting my ham ticket, I remember drooling over ham
rigs in the Heath-Kit catalog and the WRL catalog, and in QST and CQ
magazines, like a new DX100 for $189. I don't remember for sure, but I think
I only paid something like $395 for my new Galaxy 5 Mark II, which at the
time was one hot transceiver!

As you can imagine, I am more than shocked at today's prices.

When I got my ticket in 1962, I would never have believed that am amp could
cost $12,000 or more, that one could spend $10,000 for a transceiver, or
over $12,000 for an antenna including purchase price and labor. But ham
gear is no different than anything else really. Several years ago, I bought
a new pickup truck with all of the available options, including 4WD and a
diesel engine, and that it would cost me over $50,000. What has the world
come to?
