Paralympic torch relay launches on Ottawa's Victoria Island
Canwest News Service
The Paralympic torch relay was launched yesterday with a ceremonial lighting
of the flame on Ottawa's Victoria Island. More than 600 torchbearers will be
involved in the 10-day journey leading up to the Paralympic Games, which
will begin in Vancouver on March 12. In a special ceremony on Victoria
Island, elders from the Pikwakanagan and Kitigan Zibi Algonquin communities
ignited and blessed the flame before it was placed in a lantern and taken to
Parliament Hill. Once on the Hill, Paralympian Arnold Boldt started the
flame's journey with a dip of his torch. "To carry the Paralympic flame is
truly an honour," said Mr. Boldt, who won gold at the 1976 Paralympic Games
in the long jump and set a world record of 1.86 metres in the high jump. "I
hope it sparks inspiration and dreams in people of all abilities across
Canada and the world as it travels to Vancouver for the start of the Games."
