Hello my friends,

I have a report on how I think I solved the issues of my radio UV-3R not
taking the programming. Here are my findings :

1. The new drivers I installed for the PL-2303 are a bit quirky
(technical term). I will explain: wen the radio is disconnected from the
cable, it can never be written to or read from again. Keep reading!

2. If you want to make the programming software read the radio with
the latest PL 2303 device, you must modify the steps a bit. Everyone on
the net has suggested a good set of steps but I have added an additional
one to smooth things out a bit.

3. Steps to program the UV-3R after everything appears to be working
with the drivers:

a. Insert the USB to Serial Prolific PL-2303 device and wait for
Windows XP to recognize it.

b. Now, plug in the radio (make sure it is turned off before you plug
it in).

c. With the UV-3R, it takes about a good five seconds to hear the
beeps when the radio turns on. I verified this before plugging in the
radio.

d. Hold the power button (the round one at the front of the unit all
the way to the left), can't miss it) for about five to six seconds. I wait
about six because it really does not do any harm.

e. Go to the UV-3r programming software and make all your changes. I am
using the UV-3R programming software version 1.11

f. Make all your programming changes (including channel setups.

g. Important steps coming up now.

h. Save your changes to a file first (this was suggested on this list).
Make sure you remember the filename or just make a note of it.

i. Write the changes to the radio by choosing the Program menu option
and then choosing Write to Radio.

To verify that your changes took: Open a new configuration , the application
will ask if you are sure that you want to clear what you have configured.
Answer yes since you have already saved the config.

j. Now, choose Program from the menu and the option to read from the
radio.

k. You should have exactly what you wrote to the radio. Keep reading
because it does not really end here.

l. If, for some reason, you disconnect the radio from the cable, an
additional step is required at least in my configuration. Keep reading!
<smile>

m. Go to device manager, I am assuming that the radio is no longer
connected to the cable. (I will test this with the radio connected but one
step at a time)

n. Find the Prolific Device, right click on it, and then choose Disable
from the popup menu.

o. Immediately, after disabling the Prolific device, right click on it
again and re-enable it.

p. Now start from the top with the procedure for reconnecting the radio
and you've got a cigar!

q. I will update my manual which I will provide soon!

4. I am working on a manual that will have everything a blind person
will need in order to get the UV-3R working.

If I am successful with the Programming software, I will be adding those tid
bits as well.

Jose - KK4JZX
