They are probably designed differently.  The big advantage with them is, 
they are more fuel efficient, run quieter, less wear and tare on the engine.

Hi Russ,

How do you get 60 hertz out of a generator rotating at 1800 RPM?  1800 RPM
would produce 30 hertz unless the generator is geared to run at twice the
motor speed.
