Our next phone meeting is scheduled for this Friday, March 27 at 8:00 PM
Eastern time. I honestly have not prepared a particular topic and so
we'll have an open Q&A session, allowing us to ask and answer questions
dealing with our computers and other computing devices. There are
several things which may be on your mind.
1. Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 is scheduled for release this
summer. It will include Cortana, the new voice assistant, similar in
many ways to Siri. Remember that it's also free for users of Windows 7,
8 or 8.1. Are you excited about it? Will you try to upgrade to this
latest OS?
2. Apple released iOS 8.2 for iPhones and other compatible devices. If
you use an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, have you upgraded? Do you like
the new version? Do you notice any improvements or bugs?
3. Apple also announced that their new Apple Watch will be available in
April. Are you interested in buying or at least seeing one? Do you care?
4. Users of the NVDA screen reader may be quite excited to know that a
remote access package is in development. The developers of this program
intended to raise $10,000.00 in 40 days and made their goal in just a
few days and have now raised around $12,100.00.
5. National Braille Press released another book covering iOS 8, its
second book covering this operating system. They also have a book
covering the use of VoiceOver on the Mac as well as tactile diagrams for
users of the iPad. Have you purchased any of these books? Do you like
them? Do you find them helpful?
6. VICT Consultancy in the U.K. is developing a piece of software called
AT Prime, which will add accessibility to programs which are currently
not very accessible with screen readers, which may cost approximately
$100.00 per year. Have any of you heard any demos of this program? Would
you pay for such a service?
7. AI Squared released version 9.1 of Window-Eyes, including bug fixes
and the return of the placemarkers feature.
8. Humanware has announced a new GPS unit called the Trekker Breeze
Plus. How do you feel about stand-alone GPS units in a time where we
have smartphones with extremely affordable GPS apps?
9. Visus Technology released a free app called Velasense, available only
on Android phones and only for Verizon Wireless customers, which
promises features such as money identification, texting, etc.
