Hi John, well, I have owned a Vr500 since the late 1990's and use
it enough or not enough so I have to review the procedures of how
to use the thing when I get it out and put batteries in it. I
like the radio, but I only complaint is that the back case has
developed a crack in it if I leave the double a batteries in for
too long. I have had to replace it twice but fortunately Yaesu
sells it for not too much. For many years, before I got my
Ts-480, the Vr500 was my only SWL receiver. Jim WA6EKS -----

You have to remember, the vx 8 and whatever were meant as ham
transceivers
first and formost so obviously they'll do that better than short
wave
receive. The vr-500 is as far as I know, an actual short wave
receiver so
that in itself means it better be better. I don't know many
people who've
kept that series of yaesu Ht's very long due to the difficulty in
using them
and I haven't really played with them.

I hope the vr500 isn't as deaf as the vx5 and on up to the vx8 on
HF
bands...
It's great and wonderful that they thought to add HF receive
capability,
but
it's almost pointless because it's so deaf on those Yaesu HT's.
I have heard excellent things about the vr500 though, so I would
imagine
it
has a better all around receiver in it.

Russ, how much is the Grundig G3? Sounds like a great radio.
The
Vr500 will fit in your shirt pocket and runs on 2 double a
batteries or uses the same wall wart as the Yaesu Ht's Vx5r and
such. Jim
