	Thanks for all the responses.

	Had a ham over who is more than qualified and he pretty much duplicated 
most of the steps I took.

	Took the voice chip out which made no difference. There is only one way 
to put that in and because I did this on the v71a, I knew what to expect.

	Cannot do a reset on a dead unit, the display remains dark, the fan 
will not turn on.

	Just now I tested Steve's theory about the modular plugs. Yes the small 
one will fit perfectly into the larger (mic) jack. There would be no way 
of knowing it was not in the proper jack except that one would then not 
have a place to connect the mic.

	There is a rarttle and he ssays a screw is missing but he could not see 
where it was. I am going to ask him to come over and take another look 
before I contact Kenwood. Of course if that was the killer, it wont do 
any good and I will still send it back. ;(
