There are many drawbacks to the use of biopsy for diagnosing celiac disease and for monitoring dietary compliance.

Excellent progress has been made by a Dutch group in validating a simple blood test that might eliminate the need for most biopsies. I think that this is some of the most exciting research in the celiac disease field over the past couple of years.
