The most authoritative comment is:
If a celiac is in full remission on GFD, he/she would need the amount of vitamin A everybody else needs, and this is typically found in a normal (even GF) Western diet with no specific need of supplementation.

Professor and Chief,
Section of Pediatric Gastroenterology
University of Chicago
Founder and Medical Director, Celiac Disease Center

Experience of others:
If I read it correctly, it is only a problem when your insides are inflamed already from a glutening. The article said that Vit A is too necessary to give it up. But I have nothing to add.

I just read the same thing. Here is what I got out of it.... if you get glutened then the Vitamin A in your system would make the inflammatory response worse for you. So try to refrain from eating foods that contain vitamin A during this time.

Wow...can't imagine, unless that source was referring to synthetic vitamin A. Personally, I don't use any synthetic vitamins...we're still "discovering" vitamins & in nature they are never in an isolated form. My understanding of vitamin A is opposite of the blurb you read. Vitamin A is an important part of the fat soluble vitamins that celiacs desperately need. I suppose if the gut has not healed & still inflamed, many foods would cause
an inflammatory response, including vitamin supplements.

I interviewed a doctor from the University of Chicago for the Summer 2011 issue of Delight Gluten-Free Magazine. Dr. Guandalini mentioned the Vitamin A issue noting that people with celiac might want to avoid foods high in Vitamin A and even medications for acne that contain a large amount of Vitamin A. He didn't get into a lot of detail about it, but you might check their website for an article or newsletter about the subject. It's a valid study and apparently proves that we should be watching how much Vitamin A we take in.

My thanks to all who wrote! For me personally, I will continue to juice carrots and take a multivitamin without A!
