Harry,

Frankly, the part of your judgment that is quite questionable, despite being
a ham for 35 years, is that you think you can adjust a solidstate
transceiver using an inherently narrow-banded antenna by noise alone.
Second, you can better protect your rig if you tune with minimum power if
you don't have a noise bridge, until you get the SWR close to a decent
range, say 1.5:1 for older rigs that don't foldback power very well.

I know some hams who aren't technically knowledgeable and they've been
licensed for more than forty years. There are also those who are extremely
competent and just received their license. The length one holds their
license is immaterial. The application of logic and knowledge is quite
relevant.

Harry,

How then do you explain those of us who have terific experiences with
autotuners, compromises not withstanding? And how do you explain the many
many hams, quite a few on this list, who have had very good experiences on
ebay?

If you don't like autotuners, fine! Don't use them. Same for ebay. But
don't present your own experience as an open and shut case.
I know that I, WA3MIX, am wrong all the time. And I presume the same is
true of WD8OEP. Often, it is someone on this list who convinces me that
I'm mistaken or that I don't really understand something I thought I did.
