yes, rolling around the bands and responding to stations calling for field
day is perfectly ok.
I call this hunt and pounce...you hunt for loud stations, then throw your
call sign at them when they say QRZ or whatever they are saying at the end
of their transmission.
They come back to you with their exchange and say QSL, although quite often
they do not say QSL unless they need you to repeat something, or they only
have part of your exchange.
Best thing to do is sit and listen to a station who is working allot of
other stations. You'll get a feel for the rhythm of the exchanges very
quicklly this way.
20 meters will be bonkers tomorrow with probably everyone 10 or 20 over, so
you'll have no trouble finding someone to learn from hi hi.
If you are unsure of your own exchange, you can obtain that info from nearly
anyone on the band early in the contest.
Just throw out your call sign, and say I'm not sure of my exchange
info...they'll ask where you are, what your station set up is and then let
you know very quickly what you should be telling everyone.
I do that almost every year since I can never remember what my exchange
should be lol.
