Hi,
The main things I'm looking for in a radio are accessibility, low cost, and something that doesn't require an antenna tower or other fixed installation. As for which bands, I'm not really sure which bands are best, and I'm open to suggestions. Whether the radio is handheld or requires AC power isn't that big of a deal, a handheld would be more fun in that it would be easier to travel with, but I'd probably end up with whichever is cheaper.
HTH,
Karl
