Hi Dan,
It sounds like you are using the meter correctly.  It goes in series with the load.  Some multimeters have a fuse in series with the ammeter portion.  If you accidentally put the meter across the voltage instead of in series with the load, this fuse will blow.  By the meter reading not changing with the different resistors, I would guess that this fuse is blown in your meter.
I have a nexttech meter, but haven't used it to measure current.
by the way, when you are measuring current, you must be very careful not to put the meter across a voltage source, like a battery.  To the battery, the meter looks like a short circuit.
