Yes, that 18% loss is consistent even with other Kenwood rigs.
I know 15 watts or so doesn't make a wit of difference, but since I have an
external tuner, I leave the internal tuner out of the loop entirely.

I just checked my 590 internal tuner verses no tuner into a dummy load and I
loose 18 percent with the internal configuration. You have to double your
power to gain 3 D B's so chances are no one would ever know one way or the
other. The best is to have resonant antennas but that not always possible.
