You don't want to use a soldering gun when working with discreet components 
or integrated circuits.  Those are for bigger jobs like antenna insulators 
etc.  I've put meters together and I basically used the excess leads that 
come with components as a heat sync.  You can feel the solder as it melts 
and there is some steam that you can feel when good electrical connection is 
made.  I probably wouldn't cut the excess leads off until you've soldered
