John, am really sorry about what happened. Its awful. Gosh I remember
years ago when I had a dx100 and the rectifier sockets would short out. And
had transformers let go--now that's an interesting smell for sure.

It's the known built in power supply problem for the TS-930, I can only
think something was hurt back at field day because this is the first time I
used it since then. For whatever reason it was straining like anything when
I tried to transmit to check SWR, and on low power as well, I let it warm up
for a few minutes and tried it again, that's when I got the smell and
noises. Been there and done that before. I probably should have just shut it
right off when I noticed it struggling, it never buzzed like that before but
it was a bit cool in the sun room, I hoped letting it warm up would help it.

I don't know. It's done now. I hope it's just capacitors but either way, I'm
not in a position to fix it but I have had a couple good offers already for
it. I think I figured out the antenna issue as well, it's all unrelated but
next time I'll try it with the tripod, or I'll just wait until the permanent
install is done, the ground froze before I could get to it this year, I
figured it would but in the spring, first project is put a floor in the
shed, then fix the lawn mower, after that comes the antenna unless I happen
to sneak it in but the other 2 will be while the ground's still frozen for
the most part and for ground mounted antenna, I don't think I can while the
ground is frozen. Now the wet season, after seeing how my yard muddies up
with very little grass out there anymore, that's the time to do it then
worry about the grass.
