Actually, the plug that attaches to the cartridge isn't the standard one but
is slightly different. That's why I suggested getting the special one.

I assume we're talking about books from BARD and downloading them onto a
blank cartridge to be used in an NLS digital talking book player. I
further assume we're talking about Windows here. Is this all true?

You'll need a USB cable with a standard mail connector to attach to your
PC at one end and a standard female connector to attach to your
cartridge at the other end. You can get these cables anywhere, but not
every cable will fit into the cartridge's housing. To be safe, follow
Don's advice and get a cable from APH or Perkins. they'll cost a bit
more, but you know you'll get a working cable.

Once your cartridge is attached to your PC, it'll just show up as a
removable drive, and you can use whatever tools you use to copy file to
and from a drive on your system. For example, if you're using Windows,
you can just use Windows Explorer.

If you're downloading these books from BARD, they'll show up as a
compressed zip file. You'll need to uncompress them. the book player
will only recognized uncompressed files. Furthermore, each book should
be placed in it's own folder. This is usually just the root on the
cartridge, but I believe the book player doesn't care, as long as their
each in their own folder. You can use any tool you want to uncompress
the files, for example, Windows Explorer has such a utility built in.

I haven't been there in a while, but the BARD Talk home page was a good
source of information, including where to get cartridges and cables,
tutorials on downloading books to your cartridge and so on. The URL is:
