Amadou Hampaté Bâ, the Malian writer and ethnologist said it this way:
«Un vieillard qui meurt est une bibliothèque qui brûle» translated as "an elder who dies is a library that burns."
This saying has always given me food for thought. It often helps me understand how respect for our customs and traditions can work to marginalize entire groups and eventually hinder development. In the case of this saying, women and youth have nothing constructive to rely upon when thinking about the future. Can we think about this in terms of the future for Africa and Africans (where ever we live)? On the whole continent, 75% of the population is under the age of 25 with more than 50% female. This population group have a clear idea of the type of future they need. Are they listened to? What happens to them whenever they express themselves?
How does this work in our households, in our family, on this listserv, in our various organizations, in our African community here in the Madison area, in the large African diaspora?
See you tomorrow at the picnic.
Peace,
