FEMALE SOLDIER AND HUSBAND FOUND SHOT DEAD IN THEIR ROOM IN THE BARRACKS
By Abubacarr Saidykhan on 01-09-11
Information reaching Foroyaa revealed that a female soldier, Mariama
Camara, who was staying at the new State Guards Barracks at the former
Palm Grove Hotel, opposite the Mile Two prison in the outskirts of
Banjul, was found dead in her room together with her civilian husband
apparently from gunshots. This fatal incident was said to have
occurred in the morning of Saturday, 27 August 2011 at the said
barracks where Camara, who served under the State Guards, shared a
room with her husband. The reasons for the shooting that led to the
death of both husband and wife are still unknown.
The female soldier is said to have come from Essau in the North Bank Region.
This reporter managed to visit the said Barracks but was told by the
Camp Commander, upon inquiry, that the incident is being investigated
by the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Gambia Armed Forces (GAF)
and the Gambia Police Force (GPF).
According to the Camp Commander, who did not say much, they only heard
gunshots in one of the rooms which prompted many of the soldiers to
start inquiring about what was really happening in the camp. He said
when they arrived at the room, where the shots were heard coming from,
they found both wife and husband lying dead on the floor in a pool of
blood.
The Camp Commander later referred this reporter to the Banjul Police
Headquarters for further inquiries as the Police are handling the
matter.
When the Police PRO was contacted, he told this reporter that the
information was news to him.
As for the GAF PRO, efforts were made to reach him but to no avail.
Foroyaa will make further enquiries and inform readers accordingly.
