I use and like Windows backup. However, it does not backup everything you
need to do a transfer to a new drive. The registry is backed up, but some
system files are not. At least that has been my experience. To do a system
transfer, you will probably want to use some disk imaging software such as
Norton Ghost, or software that is often provided by the drive manufacturer.

Windows XP has backup software that states it will back up your entire
system. Does anyone know if it backs up the registry so you can do a
complete restore to a new hard drive ?
