Hi Butch,
There is such a recorder, made by Olympus, the problem with it is, there's no AC capability, so, it's gonna eat batteries. I didn't buy it, for that reason.

  Subject: looking for digital recorder

I'm looking for a digital recorder that will let me stop and resume
recording or appending the same file, just like you would do on a
cassette. I would prefer mp3 format. I could probably find a program on
the computer that would do this, but looking for something portable.
Anyone got any ideas. I have a victor stream and book sense, but although
you can pause wile recording, you can't add to the file once it is
  stopped.

  Hope all that makes sense.
