Wow what a story. I bet you were upset when you got that letter that you
didn't pass hi hi. Yes they used to describe the diagrams to me as well.

I had my Conditional. In 1975, I decided to upgrade.
My dad and I went to the Detroit office of the FCC. They had a Braille copy
of the General exam which I took. But, the engineer couldn't find the
scoring key, so he said let's assume you passed. He game my dad the
Advanced test to read to me; and he came in to do the schematic
descriptions. I passed that, so he did the same with the Extra.
In one of the diagrams, he described it and said there is a PNP transistor
and he described what it was hooked to. Then, on the third question asking
about the schematic, he says "Oh Shit! I gave you the answer to this..."
The question was "what kind of transistor is this? To prove to him that I
would have known, I told him that the arrows pointed inward. I passed that.
A couple weeks later, the FCC sent me a letter that I had not passed the
General, but then a couple weeks later, I got another letter which said I
did pass. A couple weeks after that, I got my Extra.
