I downloaded the vertual version of vinux 3.01, the most recent stable 
release.
It'll run along side windows and allows one to get a feel for linux/vinux 
with windows running and no other effects on the system.
I'll play with it for a while and see if it'll work on the netbook and 
desktop.
Once I can get that running and get somewhat familiar with it, I'll find an 
old computer somewhere and install vinux on it as the stand alone OS.
It seems very promising right now.
Even the net browser and email seem like they wouldn't be difficult to 
figure out and use.
I'll be no power linux user, but I think I can manage to fumble my way 
through vinux to get it to do what I want.
