I had a similar exprience some months ago and was advised to rest the speed in the software to a lower rate. It worked for me.

I get the error messages:  'there is no disc in the drive' or 'the disk is either full, or not a writable CD.'  These are the same CD-R discs I've been using all along, with various brand names (Memorex, TDK) and they are all 52X, 700 MB, 80-minute capacity.  So now am I going to have to replace the CD drive?  Or is there some kind of quick fix MS is not telling me about?

eMachines with a 160-gig HD, running Win XP Home.  Thanks in advance for any help!
