The newest revision of the hardware, sold by Ed Griffin of 
http://wouxun.us/ comes with a dual-band antenna and is apparently 
better behaved.

Sounds like a good place to start building a simplex IRLP micronode, 
since its "low" power setting will quite adequately do the job.
