do you have an outdoor antenna set up now?
fairly unlikely that you'll notice much propagation on an HT with a 
duck...unless it's really really good propagation.
In fact, what you are talking about isn't actually technically propagation, 
but tropospheric ducting which isn't in the realm of actual propagation as 
it relates to RF radio waves.
 It's ducting which is another physical manifestation of a similar 
phenomenon.
Allot of people call it propagation because that's how they relate to it 
bassed on what happens on HF frequencies at the ionisphere.
