Job Description
The Virginia Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired (DBVI)
is
the Commonwealth's agency solely dedicated to empowering
individuals
who are blind, vision impaired, and deafblind to achieve their
maximum
level of employment, education, and personal independence. DBVI
services include vocational rehabilitation, education,
independent
living skills, orientation and mobility, deafblind services and a
comprehensive statewide low vision program. The agency also
operates
the Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision
Impaired,
(a residential training facility), a Library and Resource Center,
the
Virginia Industries for the Blind, and the Randolph-Sheppard
vending
facility program. DBVI employees embody the values of integrity,
honesty and teamwork, ensuring respect for customers and
supporting
personal choice.
The Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision
Impaired
(VRCBVI) is the residential training center for DBVI. VRCBVI
provides
individualized adjustment training services to empower eligible
adolescents and adults with visual impairments to achieve
independence. DBVI employees embody the values of integrity,
honesty
and teamwork, ensuring respect for customers and supporting
personal
choice.
We are seeking a professional computer instructor to organize,
plan
and deliver individualized instruction in computer skills to
blind and
vision impaired students. This instruction is designed to help
students achieve their maximum independence in personal,
educational
and vocational communication. You will evaluate student computer
skills needs, develop individualized training, and provide the
training to students. You will compile weekly written reports on
progress and recommendations for future rehabilitation planning,
and
develop monthly statistical reports. You will participate in
program
development and provide orientation and training to agency staff,
family members of students, professionals, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
You will need:
*High level of computer software literacy (esp MS Office) and
demonstrated ability to master multiple computer application and
access programs;
*Demonstrated ability to evaluate the computer access needs and
computer skills of blind adolescents and adults;
*Demonstrated knowledge and experience in assistive technology,
including background in the use of CCTVs, screen magnifiers,
screen
readers, Braille translation software and OCR software;
*Demonstrated knowledge of online courseware designed to help
college
students monitor and improve performance (ANGEL, WebCT,
Blackboard,
Desire2Learn, FirstClass, Sakai, Moodle), keep track of grades,
hand
in assignments, access course materials, participate in class
discussions, etc.;
*Demonstrated teaching ability;
*Ability to identify any accessibility issues with online
computer programs;
*Ability to teach effective strategies for accessing online
academic programs;
*Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
*Ability to install, test and configure hardware and software to
facilitate operation with speech, refreshable Braille, and screen
enlargement systems;
*Ability to teach the use of social media;
*Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications
*Demonstated ability to formulate an instructional plan to meet
each
student's needs and provide appropriate instruction; and to
prepare
written reports on student's progress.
*Demonstrated knowledge of iOS products and their
accessibility/applications relevant to visually impaired
individuals
*Prefer college degree with coursework in education, information
systems/computer science and/or rehabilitation, OR combination of
education, experience and professional certification relating to
use
of assitive technology used by individuals who are blind,
vision-impaired, or deafblind.
*Direct experience working with individuals who are blind,
vision-impaired, or deafblind preferred.
Special Requirements
Successful completion of fingerprinting and criminal background
check
required. Annual completion of Statement of Economic Interests
form
required.
