As a matter of fact, no, they can't. While we blind people are
pretty used to the idea of listening to multiple things at once,
sighted people tend to only look at one thing at a time. Watching
your phone or something when you need to be watching something else
is not exactly recommended. Also, while jogging or running, fiddling
with whatever pouch or pocket you've got your phone in is likely to
mess up your run.
I myself frequently have my phone in a velcro pouch on a runner's
belt, which is under a parka or similar as warranted by the Oregon
weather. I've got a pair of iPhone-ready IPEVO over-the-ear buds
(which don't go into your ear and consequently don't muffle sound
directions!), and I tend to wear them so that I can answer a call or
listen to music when I'm not near a street crossing. If I'm wearing
gloves, it's even more problematic. For me, there cannot be enough
voice commands, and I'm really sorry I won't have Siri until I buy a
new iPhone.
Basically, the more it can do without me having to fish it out, look
at it, or touch it with bare fingers when it gets cold, the better it
will be if the circumstances are right. That's why I consider the
iPhone 4S a monumental step forward, and not a disappointing
non-iPhone 5.
