Webinar Series: Exploring Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Version 2
Thursdays March 26, April 2, 9 and 16 all at 2 PM Eastern
Presenters: Norman Coombs, Marisol Miranda and guests
The Web Accessibility Initiative released version 2 of its Web
Accessibility Guidelines, (WCAG), at the end of 2008. The WCAG version 2 is
both detailed and complex. This 4-part, fee-based series, will take you
step-by-step through them. The WCAG is now divided into 4 major principles:
Perceivable, Operable, Understandable and Robust. The next level has 12
major guidelines. Below that the guidelines are expanded further into over
60 items. The WCAG also, like its predecessor, has 3 different possible
levels of compliance: levels A, AA and AAA. These guidelines cover almost
every and any possible issue related to accessibility. They point out
problem areas and provide various successful solutions.
This Webinar series is an introduction to the guidelines and will focus on
Level A issues. The series will help you understand the accessibility
issues and outline ways you can solve them. However, it will focus on
understanding the WCAG and will not be teaching HTML itself. It assumes you
have at least a beginner or intermediate understanding of Web design already.
The series has 3 goals:
· Remove as much technical jargon as possible from the presentation,
· Provide you with the knowledge to be able to navigate the
guidelines efficiently,
· Focus on and explain the couple dozen items that relate to level A
conformance.
Webinar 1
Tuesday March 26
Will introduce the rich set of resources available in the guidelines and
help you construct a mental map to enable you to better navigate them.
Webinar 2
Tuesday April 2
Will focus on principle 1, Perceivable, and on the level A items in
guidelines:
· 1.1 Provide text alternatives for any non-text content so that it
can be changed into other forms people need, such as large print, braille,
speech, symbols or simpler language.
· 1.2 Provide alternatives for time-based media.
· 1.3 Create content that can be presented in different ways (for
example simpler layout) without losing information or structure.
1.4 Make it easier for users to see and hear content including separating
foreground from background.
Webinar 3
Tuesday April 9
Will focus on principle Operable and on level A items in guidelines:
· 2.1 Make all functionality available from a keyboard.
· 2.2 Provide users enough time to read and use content.
· 2.3 Do not design content in a way that is known to cause seizures.
· 2.4 Provide ways to help users navigate, find content, and
determine where they are.
Webinar 4
Tuesday April 16
Will focus on the level A issues in the last 2 principles. Principle
Understandable:
· 3.1 Make text content readable and understandable.
· 3.2 Make Web pages appear and operate in predictable ways.
· 3.3 Help users avoid and correct mistakes.
Principle Robust:
· 4.1 Compatible: Maximize compatibility with current and future user
agents, including assistive technologies.
