It's called foraging.

I once sat in a courtroom waiting to be persecuted, and was entertained 
by the story of a woman who had been seen teaching her children how to 
get food.
She was from one of the neighbouring Indian reservations; seems that 
paleo traditions die hard. The persecutor called it shoplifting.
