Hi Allan,
I'm a dribbler and I can attest there is a vast difference in people's
response to it: from complete revulsion to a humourous "Eeew your doing it
again".
It should be remembered that swallowing is one of those autonomous reflexes
(like breathing). Certainly, you can take a voluntary breath at any time, but
you don't have to think about background breathing.
Swallowing seems to be the same, I can voluntarily swallow, but the swallow
reflex is not working, shall we say, smoothly!!
I receive no "warning" that I am about to dribble, so in order to not dribble
I would have to focus on the build up of saliva in my mouth all the time,
when I've got many other, more pleasant, things to think about!!
So far I've stated the reasons why it may not be Daniel's "fault", that being
able to voluntarily swallow is not the same as having the swallow reflex, but
lets look at the other side, from your wife's side. I can see her point of
view.
When I was a child, other people's looks at me weren't a problem (if you've
got it - flaunt it) but for my Mum such looks were taken by her as a
criticism she was somehow not doing her job properly. Also, my dribbling,
certainly increased the laundry work for her!!
So what can you do? Maybe Daniel should use a tissue after he dribbles, since
I am usually aware after the event, and this would show your wife he's trying
to ameliorate the effects, and acknowledges her issues with it.
For your wife if she could focus on getting Daniel to clean up afterwards
(something he can do), rather than prevention (something which is difficult),
this may help ease family tension.
Regarding mouth open "catching flies!". I don't know the medical reason why I
do this (but I certainly do). It seems to happen most often when my mind is
focussed or I'm concentrating on something.
I hope parts of this are helpful to you, I'm not medically trained but I
thought you might like to hear from someone who'd been there, done that, (got
the tee shirt!!). Things turned out Ok for me - BA (Hons) English & History,
married, 3 children, worked for 35 years (although I recently took Voluntary
Redundancy, so I'm now working fulltime for my own company :-) ).
Cheers
Deri
