Gambia: Presidential candidates react to campaign rules

Banjul, Gambia -  The three presidential candidates in Gambia's
forthcoming poll have warned against acts of violence or rigging
during the election, following the unveiling of the campaign rules by
the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Banjul Thursday.
Incumbent President Yahya Jammeh warned that his ruling Alliance
Patriotic Re-orientation and Construction (APRC) party would not
accept acts of 'indiscipline' from any party.
“In 2001, our supporter was killed, and this time we are not going to
tolerate nonsense from anyone. In 1996, the opposition attacked my
supporters homes in Taliding, but this time my party and government
will not accepted that,” President Jammeh told officials IEC Thursday.

“They have their so-called democracy supporters, but we do not care
for their disapproval of our election that takes place in the Gambia.
When they have their election, no African observer is invited to
observed it...but they are always in Africa to observe election,” he
noted.

 On his part, Ousainou Darboe of the United Democratic Party (UDP)
said his party had been advocating for peaceful poll, fixed for 24
Nov., and would continue to do so. He also assured the electoral
officials that his party's campaign would be conducted in a free and
fair manner.

“We will not accept any violation of the campaign Act, the security
forces should be impartial and we will not accept any intimidation,”
he said.

The only independent candidate, Hamat N.K. Bah, said: 'Mr. Chairman we
will not sit and watch our victory washed away. Ask the chiefs and
governors to stay away from the campaign. We will do everything to
prevent violence.' He told the IEC officials that election violence
starts from the ruling party, especially the chiefs, governors and
security officers supporting the system.
