Well, the limit for your monitor is right there: 1024x768/86Hz.
So the most RAM you'd have use for on a 2D card is 1024 x 768 x
4("32-bit" mode) = 2.25MB. But because of the way video RAM is
usually organized, you'll need to get that is by buying a card
with 4MB.
Check out Matrox; I believe their PCI "Millenium" cards come in 4MB
and 8MB configurations, and they're good solid 2D performers. I
wouldn't think they'd have any problem supplying 86Hz.
