Curtis,
Let me throw in my 2¢.
The 480 and 590 are both 160-6 meters. The 480 is a lower end rig as
compared to the 590, the 590 has at least from what I've heard, better DSP
and a better noise floor for the receiver.
Now, the 2000 has a lot of extras. First, it runs 2 meters, 440, and you
can buy a module for 1296. It has a sub-receiver so you can monitor 2 or
440 at the same time as you are on HF, and you can even set it up so you can
use it remotely. That is Sky Command which requires certain rigs. But,
lacking that, you can set it up on one frequency on HF and at least carry on
a QSO on VHF. It has built-in TNC, and it can operate in satellite mode for
communicating with the birds if you ever want to do that.
All three have very accessible menus. The difference is that the 480/590
speak everything, whereas the 2000 will not speak power level or mike gain
settings; it only beeps at the low end and at the high max end. I don't
find that a particular problem, as the multi-channel knob is detented so you
can count backward say 6 clicks to get to about 70 watts, which is where I
drive my small amplifier.
Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.
